Sir Nigel Gresley, the famous locomotive designer, was having a bit of trouble. The locomotive he was designing, a mainline pacific, wasn’t coming along as well as he had hoped. A Dead Man's Tale

Imagine, if ye will, a hidden grotto, accessible only by flat-bottomed rowboat. Now sail ye into the place, the cave enveloping thee in total blackness. Now strike yourself a torch and see what ye will find in the caverns. As the firelight fills the room the nature of the grotto becomes clear. The torch reveals to ye great mounds of booty, gold and silver, satin and lace, a pirate’s hoard. The light reveals too noter sight. The Tugboat, for it’s size, is the strongest craft afloat. The Star Tugs make up the backbone of the docks and waterways that make up Big City port. This is TUGS. It was a typically blustery autumn in Big City, and a busy one too. It was an extra large harvest that year, and all modes of transport were needed. Sodor Railway Stories Episode 7: WRECKlessness

Parker and Claire are the last of the Sodor Railway’s few modern locomotives. When the line first began operation the majority of the locomotives were new type diesels, but after the controller was able to purchase some steam engines most of the diesels were retired or sold. The controller did decide to keep the sentient ones, so the pair got to stick around. The two are both Class 66 Co-Co locomotives, and both wear the grey, black and yellow of the old Sodor Railway, but other then that they have nearly nothing in common.
